As I understand it, the last version of "Kiss Me Kate" to hit Broadway had eliminated the spanking scene. That's ridiculous--it's not even "Kiss Me Kate" without that scene, as far as I'm concerned.

ReplyDeleteI'd imagine this will be the way it is going forward (until we get rid of "cancel culture" anyway) and certainly from a post-feminist standpoint. Interestingly, in Shakespeare's play "The Taming of the Shrew", Petrucchio tamed Kate with kindness, not a spanking...
ReplyDeleteSome Broadway producers got the idea that it would be more "interesting" to show her being spanked. And frankly, it kinda is... ;-p
smuccatelli -- I don't think the term "cancel culture" even existed when they put that version on the stage, so it may have had more to do anti-abuse and/or feminism......
